Evaluations very favorable for second annual retreat of school leaders

By James Field

Thirty-eight school heads and administrators from MISF member schools met at Cragun's Resort and Hotel on Gull Lake in Brainerd, Minn., earlier this fall for MISF’s second annual school head retreat. The attendees came to teach and learn from one another in order to become better at doing their jobs.

During the two-day retreat, eight sessions were held that focused on various topics important to effectively leading private and independent schools. Each of the sessions was led by school heads.

The level of participation and enthusiasm was very high, and everyone voiced a desire to repeat the experience again next year. MISF Chair Dr. John Engstrom, president of Minnehaha Academy, was the convener and dean of the event.

Dr. Engstrom and the entire MISF staff are extremely grateful to the presenters for their leadership and the time they devoted to researching and preparing their topics, including:

  • Joel Landskroener, Mayer Lutheran High School – “Preparing our students for the global world”
  • Wayne Fischer, Minnesota Valley Lutheran Schools – “Rural school issues”
  • Joe Peschges and Alanna Moravetz, Hill-Murray School – “Maintaining your leadership momentum, sustaining your creative spark”
  • Craig Junker, Cotter High School – “Electronic intrusion in our schools”
  • Dean Erickson, Minnehaha Academy – “Discussion: Making your school more ‘green,’ moving toward sustainability
  • Lynn Henry, Concordia Academy-Roseville – “Handling financial aid at your school”

MISF is grateful to the 3M Foundation for sponsoring the retreat for school leaders for the last two years. The event is a great example of MISF member schools collaborating to meet an important need.

James B. Field is President of MISF.
