The Importance of Financial Assistance Scholarships

Scholarships provided to member schools through MISF offer critical financial resources. For many small or rural schools MISF-generated scholarships are the primary source for much-needed student financial assistance. Support is especially important for students of color for whom a private school opportunity leads directly to college.

A private school opportunity offers students an increased chance for graduation and attendance at a postsecondary institution. For some students at risk, this can be a vital option. An environment in which a student thrives can redirect energy into positive results. A private school education also requires that the whole family be involved, not just the student. This dynamic can have a constructive affect on the student’s outlook and on inter-relationships among family members. The culture of each private school is unique, but all are saturated with values-based learning and approaches, expectations of commitment and accomplishment, discipline, and respect. The Success of Oanh

Oanh and her family left Vietnam in 1979, and after a year in an Indonesian refugee camp, arrived in America. With the help of scholarships to assist with tuition, Oanh was able to attend the Convent of the Visitation School from 1990-1994 (grades 9-12). During her time at Visitation, she participated in a wide variety of activities including Math Team (they went to the state competition three of her four years), Literary Staff, Student Newspaper, Volleyball, editor of the Yearbook, Diversity Group, and Campus Ministry.

Following her graduation from Visitation, Oanh went on to receive a degree in genetics and cellular biology from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. During her undergraduate studies at the University, she also worked with a professor in a pain research lab doing work with spinal levels of pain transmission.

Today, Oanh is a research laboratory coordinator/scientist in the Departments of Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology and Neuroscience at the University of Minnesota where she is part of a lab conducting pain research at the molecular and cellular level. She has been published seven times. In September of 2000, she was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Journal, one of the most highly regarded publications in the scientific community.

Oanh believes the accelerated math and science classes she took at Visitation helped prepare her for a career in the sciences. In addition, she attributes some of her literary success to the English program at Visitation where there is a strong emphasis on writing and associated writing skills.

“The opportunities available at Visitation helped to give me a strong sense of self-confidence.” says Oanh. “The students, faculty, staff, and sisters were wonderful to me while I was there. I would never have been able to attend Visitation if it weren’t for the scholarships available to me and my two sisters. My parents are so thankful I had this opportunity.”
