Minnesota Law Changes
Every year the Minnesota Independent School Forum reports to the 530 private schools in Minnesota on law changes affecting the operation of their schools. Click here to download the "2007 Minnesota State Laws Affecting Nonpublic Schools and Students."
MISF has published a "Guide to Minnesota Laws for Nonpublic PreK-12 Schools" that is available for purchase at $50.00 per copy.
MISF's 2008 Legislative Agenda
Facts for legislators
MISF will report fact to the Education Committees of the Senate and House using national data and the SCOPE reports of the last five years. We will do this as a factual presentation that will be on the record with these committees to dispel many of the myths about Minnesota’s private education movement; we will call it "State of Private Education in Minnesota 2008.” We will be presenting this to community groups around the state.
Equity and Opportunity in Education Scholarship Tax Credit Senate File # 2951 and House File # 3586
Create a contribution tax credit to encourage contributions to scholarship granting organizations that will benefit low-income K-12 students at public and private schools. This will create equity and opportunity for ALL students across Minnesota.
MISF will work with the Senate and House authors of this bill to ensure that it fits our fundraising efforts to support our schools. We will share information on how this state program can coordinate with national legislation.
Corporate Tax Credit for Kids Scholarship Program

Monitoring Legislation
We will be constantly reviewing other legislative actions (bills) that would harm private schools or in anyway lessen their independence. We will maintain contact with legislative leaders, Minnesota Department of Education and the Governor’s office. 2008 monitoring: Special Education Taskforce and Minnesota Online High.
National Legislation Concerning Private Schools
MISF will represent Minnesota’s private education to the National Council on Private Education in its legislative agenda. This information will be shared with MISF school heads and Minnesota’s private school representatives who participate in the Minnesota CAPE meetings and process.
State Representation of Private Schools
MISF’s president will maintain memberships on Minnesota P-16 Committee, NCLB Stakeholders, MMEP, Nonpublic Education Counsel (Chairman) and Minnesota Chamber of Commerce.
Coalition for Kids
Continue the creation and work of “Coalition for Kids” as funded to promote school choice through tax credits.
